Project Overview

This project provided a comprehensive and efficient accent lighting solution for retail stores on a bustling commercial street in downtown Jakarta. Addressing aging infrastructure, uneven lighting, and rising energy costs, the project aimed to transform the streetscape into a safe, pleasant, and brand-aligned environment that benefits pedestrians and local businesses.

Original Pain Points

The existing lighting setup on the street created a series of interconnected challenges that affected both public safety and retail business performance.

First, the outdated high-pressure sodium (HPS) street lights provided poor color rendering (CRI < 25), casting a yellow, flat glow that washed out storefront signage and product displays. Retailers reported that their brand colors and window displays were barely visible after dark, leading to reduced foot traffic, especially for evening and night-time shoppers.

Second, uneven illumination created dark spots between poles and storefronts, creating safety concerns for pedestrians and discouraging people from lingering along the street. Many storefronts had resorted to ad-hoc, non-compliant accent lighting fixtures, leading to glare, light pollution, and inconsistent light levels that clashed with the surrounding street environment.

Third, the combination of inefficient legacy bulbs and unregulated accent lights resulted in exorbitant energy costs for both the city and individual retailers. The old fixtures also required frequent maintenance, with burnt-out bulbs and failing ballasts creating ongoing labor and replacement expenses. Additionally, the tropical Jakarta climate—with high humidity, heavy rainfall, and occasional flooding—had caused significant corrosion and water damage to exposed fixtures, shortening their already short lifespans.

Improvement Solutions

  1. The integrated accent lighting solution addresses all pain points through a three-pronged approach: efficiency, uniformity, and brand consistency.
  2. High-Efficiency LED Accent Lighting Fixtures
  3. We replaced all high-pressure sodium lamps with dimmable LED streetlights, and each storefront is equipped with weatherproof LED accent spotlights. The main streetlights use 3000K warm white light with a color rendering index (CRI) of 80+; while the storefront accent lighting uses a slightly warmer 2700K color temperature to highlight signage without making brand colors appear dull. All fixtures meet IP65/IP66 protection standards and feature corrosion-resistant aluminum housings, sufficient to withstand Jakarta’s humid and rainy environment.
  4. Retail and Public Safety Zoning Lighting Design
  5. The solution is divided into two interconnected areas: a public street area with uniform, glare-free lighting for safety; and a storefront accent lighting area using directional spotlights to highlight window displays and signage. The accent lights are angled to prevent light spillage upwards, reducing light pollution and precisely projecting light where retailers need it most.
  6. Unified Control and Maintenance System
  7. All luminaires are connected to a central intelligent control system, supporting remote dimming, timing, and real-time monitoring. No manual bulb inspection is required, reducing maintenance. LED bulbs have a rated lifespan exceeding 50,000 hours, significantly reducing replacement frequency; modular luminaires allow for quick component replacement without complete disassembly.
  8. Compliant with Regulations and Climate Requirements
  9. Each luminaire complies with Jakarta’s lighting standards regarding brightness, glare, and light pollution. Furthermore, surge protectors and heat dissipation housings are added to cope with the high temperatures of the tropical climate and occasional voltage surges, ensuring the long-term reliability of the luminaires.

Core Lamps Used

The project utilizes three key LED lighting fixtures, each tailored to a specific part of the solution:

High-power LED streetlights (for public road lighting)

These 60W/80W LED streetlights replaced the existing 250W high-pressure sodium lamps, consuming only 30% of the power while maintaining the same brightness.

Adjustable LED spotlights (for retail storefronts)

These 20W/30W directional spotlights are installed above each storefront, with adjustable angles to highlight signage, window displays, or architectural features.
